Definition

We have constructed the northern section of the A1 Motorway from Gdansk to Torun of 152 km. In this project NDI had a role as the general contractor in a joint venture with Skanska SA and also as an investor in the concessionaire company, Gdańsk Transport Company SA (GTC). NDI was involved in financing, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the motorway. The project was organised under a schedule of a public-private partnership (PPP) between the investor and the Polish government.

The construction of the 152 km long section of the A1 motorway, which was subject to concession, was divided into two stages:

Stage 1 - an agreement signed with the Polish government in 2004 for the first stage - a 90 km long section from Rusocin to Nowe Marzy. The contract value was 529 million euro.

Stage 2 - an agreement signed with the Polish government in 2008 for the second stage - a 62 km long section from Nowe Marzy to Torun. The contract value was 730 million euro.

The first stage of the A1 Motorway was commissioned as a fully operational road 4.5 months before the contractual deadline.

The Motorway in numbers:

The Cheops Pyramid: 186,4×921,4×5,30×146.7 m = 2 595 000 m3.

During 2.5 years we have moved earth material of the volume of almost 9 pyramids -134 000 m3.

Concrete

From the concrete we have used you could build a bicycle route 1.5 m wide and 15 cm thick across the whole of Poland, from the north to the south of the country.
- 1 600 000 tonnes of bitumen mixes. We have transported 3.5 million tonnes of aggregates of various types for the project. The trains alone transported some 2.5 million tonnes. That is ca 45 thousand goods wagons. If the wagons were linked together, the train would be over 650 km long! At the project's peak time one production facility alone used to deliver ca 100,000 tonnes of bitumen mass per month. In the best weeks two production facilities delivered over 50,000 tonnes of bitumen mixes.
- 500 machines working in teams, including 56 3D GPS machines, employing 50 workers,
- over 200,000 tests performed.
